After many years of construction, the largest seated Buddha statue of Sri Lanka was completed in 2008. This is located on Kande Vihara, the holy mountain in Aluthgama. It is about 50 meters high and about 45 meters wide.

The Buddha figure is accessible from the inside, two floors can be visited, they are decorated with beautiful, colorful paintings.

Behind the new Buddha figure is the old temple from 1734, a very popular pilgrimage destination of the local Buddhists and an important educational center.

Built during era of King Devanampiyatissa ((250-210 BC)  The Wanawasa Rajamaha Viharaya of Bentota is believed to be the one part of the Panchamaha Vihara complex of Bentota.

The location where the Bodhi Tree was planted became Bodhi Maluwa Rajamaha Viharaya,  the location where the Arhats lived became the Wanawasa Rajamaha Viharaya, the place where the three chaithas were located became Galapatha Rajamaha Viharaya, where the additional Bodhi trees were planted became Bodhi Sameepa Rajamaha Viharaya and the where the temple (vehera) was located became Benvehera Rajamaha Viharaya completing all the components of the  Panchamana Viharaya.

It was known that all these temples were connected through underground tunnels but any proof of these tunnels were missing until  a garbage pit of Wanawasa Rajamaha Viharaya exposed a tunnel long forgotten.

After facing destruction and looting during the Dutch and the Portuguese occupations, today Wanawasi Rajamaha Viharaya is a normal Buddhist temple in all aspects but the uniqueness of this temple is this tunnel which now has been excavated and restored to a extent. An ancient rock pillar door frame at the entrance to this tunnel can still be seen today.

Beautiful Gardens

Located ten kilometers inland from Bentota, Brief Garden is the legendary garden and country home of Bevis Bawa and was the garden which inspired his brother, renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa to create Lunuganga. The garden, which has been open to the public since 1970, resembles a magical place from a fantasy novel and presents a wonderful space in which to lose yourself for a few hours. With over 106 different kinds of trees recorded on this 20 acre property and hundreds of other fauna still being counted today, the garden is a must-see for those with a keen interest in landscape design.

Get to know the life and time of the late Geoffrey Bawa, one of Sri Lanka's most renowned architects. Your guide for the day will be a Lunuganga staff member who will guide you through the beautiful, tropical, modernist country house of Bawa.
